Nancy White Seminar

Nancy’s inviting us to explore ideas about different types of communities:
• Learning communities
• communities of practice
• broad networks
• informal communities
• internal communities
• parent support communities

The range seems endless. Regardless of the type of community, she refers to the power and control issues inherent within communities. Nancy discusses the relationsship between facilitating communities and the disruption to the top down order of things this frequently involves.

A key learning for me was the idea of bringing participation and reification closer together. I see this as fundamental to leadership, the concept of building shared meaning. It prompted me to think about about how rarely this idea is promoted within organisations as:
A. Leadership; and
B. Desirable.

It’s really interesting to think about the multiple continuum at play in any community. Nancy suggests analysing communities using a few different frameworks:

1. Orientation
2. Polarities; and
3. Form.

Orientation involves a number of dimensions e.g. Internal vs external focus, strong vs weak relationships, frequency of meetings and so forth.

Polarities include asynchronous or synchronous, togetherness or separateness, group or individual, publishing or participation.

Finally – form; me, we and/or networks. How do we engage, for whose benefit? Nancy’s new book Digital Habitats is a great read and

In the afternoon we also worked together on graphical recording and facilitation which was fabulous and soooo much fun.

Today’s session was just a taster, but not long enough. Nancy has so much to offer. It was great to work with someone whose focus is so firmly based in the purpose rather than the technology, drawing our attention back to the community and it’s needs and what technology might best serve this purpose.

I’ve added some of the amazing work of those who attended today’s workshops (using Animoto and my iPhone), thank you for your generousity in sharing your work.

All this: experienced, captured and published and I’m still 50km from home. Ah ….
